The Emoji Movie is a 2017 American 3D computer-animated comedy filmdirected by Tony Leondis, and written by Leondis, Eric Siegel and Mike White, based on the trend of emojis.[4]It stars the voices of T. J. Miller, James Corden, Anna Faris, Maya Rudolph, Steven Wright, Rob Riggle, Jennifer Coolidge, Christina Aguilera, Sofía Vergara, Sean Hayes and Patrick Stewart. The film centers on Gene, a multi-expressional emoji who lives in a teenager’s phone, and who sets out on a journey to become a normal mehemoji like his parents.[5][6]
Produced by Sony Pictures Animationand distributed by Columbia Pictures, The Emoji Movie premiered on July 23, 2017, at the Regency Village Theatreand was theatrically released in the United States on July 28, 2017. It received harsh reviews from critics and grossed $217 million worldwide.[7][8]The film received nominations for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screen Combo, and Worst Screenplayat the 38th Golden Raspberry Awards, making it the first animated film to receive nominations in those categories for the Golden Raspberry Awards.
